Just before dawn, Charles entered the house he shared with his son and found Matthew sitting in the dim grey light waiting for him. Charles stopped just inside the open terrace doors, his mind touching his son’s, recoiling from the anger. Charles walked past him and up the stairs to his room. Margueri’s scent was all over him and there was no apology he could make unless he was also willing to give her up.

But the next day, he was surprised to find Matthew waiting for him so they could ride together to AustraGlass as they often did. Though they were both thinking of Margueri, neither spoke of her until they approached the firm. Then Matthew said simply, “She has made her choice. Whatever feelings I had for her are no longer relevant, are they, Father?”

This time Charles did not correct his son’s use of their tie. Their past was of the utmost importance now, the one bond that truly mattered.

“What did you feel when you used her?” Matthew asked in the family language, using the specific night word arige, implying “drink/use/satisfaction.”

“Na arige,” his father replied and added honestly, “Joy.”

Matthew did not respond. A mental wall guarded his thoughts but in the next few weeks their relationship became, if anything, warmer, Matthew’s anger inexplicably directed toward Steffen rather than his father.
